Mary Bowman
Founding Partner
Mary is a founding partner of Gustafson Porter + Bowman. Her experience as both a qualified Architect and Landscape Architect has allowed her to share knowledge and promote landscape architecture as a vital profession in the design of the built environment.
Mary is currently leading a large multi-disciplinary design team for the Eiffel Tower project in Paris. She is the partner in charge of the Stratford Cross landscape and the recently completed King Charles Street Quad. Mary has collaborated on high-profile projects ranging from the Treasury Courtyards, the Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain, Valencia Parque Central in Spain and the Marina One development in Singapore.
Mary studied architecture at the University of Virginia and the Architectural Association. She worked for Foster + Partners for over a decade, where she was one of the first female associates. In 1999 Mary joined architects Walters & Cohen as a Director. In 2002, intrigued by the relationship between landscape and architecture, Mary joined Gustafson Porter and currently devotes her energy to landscape design and the management of the practice.
Mary has lectured on landscape architecture at universities in London, Manchester, Stockholm, Talinn, and Valencia. She has been an External Examiner for the Architectural Association, the Bartlett and the Mackintosh School of Architecture, Glasgow as well as judging RIBA Awards. She is a Chartered Member of the Landscape Institute and a Chartered Architect and member of the Royal Institute of British Architects. She was a member of the AA Council from 2005-2009 and served as Vice President 2005-2007. Mary has chaired the Landscape jury at the World Architecture Festival and she contributes annually to the 10×10 Drawing the City event for Article 25.
Mary has actively contributed to raising the profile of female architects in the industry, and she is currently on the steering group of the Equilibrium Network. The group aims to address the attrition rates of women professionals within the construction industry and to promote diversity.
